The last two days marked the final event of our Wiesn Shuttle project, and it was phenomenal! The autonomous vehicle successfully navigated the challenging environment of Oktoberfest in Munich. We encountered countless pedestrians (many of whom ignored basic traffic rules), unpredictable cyclists 🚴♂️, parked vehicles blocking the road, and busy tram traffic – and the vehicle handled it all like a pro!
We were honored to have Mayor Dieter Reiter, Bavarian Science Minister Markus Blume, Technische Universität München President Thomas F. Hofmann, Sabine Effner from the Mobility Department of Munich, and Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner join us. They were all amazed by the vehicle's performance, and the media attention was huge! Visitors and passengers alike were impressed with the experience.
A big shoutout to Florian Pfab from FTM Institute of Automotive Technology TUM, the project lead of Wiesn Shuttle. The team worked hard for 3 years on this project, which was part of the MCube - Munich Cluster for the future of Mobility in Metropolitan Regions.
At the Lehrstuhl für Ergonomie/ Human Factors TUM, we contributed by integrating external communication with pedestrians using an LED strip on the vehicle (check out the video!). It was a real eye-catcher! Special thanks to Sarah Gruber and Maximilian Hübner for their amazing work.
This project is shaping the future of autonomous mobility!
