Load Carrying Capacity Cylindrical Gears

Project Description

Today, a wide variety of test specimens and test rigs are used to determine the strength characteristics of polymer gears. There are significant differences in the operating conditions and evaluation methods. However, there are no qualified statements on the comparability of the characteristic values determined on different test rigs so far. Furthermore, the test and evaluation methods have not yet been definitively standardized. In addition, there is a significant influence of temperature on gear load carrying capacity, which is not sufficiently considered in the calculation method for gear load carrying capacity. By combining and directly comparing different test concepts and test specimens as well as comparing differently determined strength values, statements can be made on the comparability of experimentally determined load carrying capacity characteristic values. In addition, a database of experimentally determined strength values will be available after completion of the project, which can be used in subsequent standardization work to extend analytical calculation approaches (e. g. consideration of temperature in tooth root load carrying capacity calculation). Therefore, the research project serves as a basis and provides the fundamentals for the later further development of the load carrying capacity calculation of polymer gears in the context of DIN 3990.
