Project Description
The fatigue strength design of highly stressed components is becoming increasingly important in terms of resource efficiency and lightweight construction. Even today, numerous practical applications are not designed according to the endurance limit, but are designed for their service life in order to leverage the corresponding potential of power density and to save weight. Thermochemical surface layer heat treatment processes, such as nitriding, significantly improve the performance properties of gears compared to the hardened and tempered base material.
However, results from previous projects [1, 2] confirm an increased overload sensitivity of nitrided gears in the area of fatigue strength known from the literature [3-5]. This overload sensitivity occurred both with the usual nitriding depth and with increased nitriding depth (NHD).
In the proposed research project, the fatigue strength of nitrided gears is therefore to be investigated in order to increase it with knowledge of the underlying material-technical mechanisms through specific heat treatment measures.
